Growth Modifiers
In Fire Emblem, level-ups work on a system of random growths. That means that every character has a random chance to gain each stat upon a level-up, such as a 60% chance to gain a point of HP, 50% to gain strength, 5% to gain magic, and so on. In the rare case that a character has a growth rate over 100%, they are guaranteed to gain at least 1 point in the stat and then have a (growth - 100)% chance to gain a second point. If you would like to know each character's growth rates, I recommend checking this page on Serenes Forest. In some games, like the featured Path of Radiance, there are items that can offer bonuses to growth rates when equipped for more information on those, they're part of this page on Serenes Forest.
Each class has a maximum level. Currently, every game featured (which is just Path of Radiance for now) works on a system where every class has a max level of 20. There are also two types of classes: base and promoted. With a couple of exceptions, every base class can promote into their respective promoted class. This can be done via an item if the character is level 10 or higher, or - in a system unique to Path of Radiance and its sequel - by allowing the character to reach level 21 and promote naturally. When a character promotes, they gain set bonuses to their stats and reset to level 1. In every game currently featured, promoted classes cannot promote again. For more information on the promotion lines of each class and their respective promotion bonuses, I recommend checking out this page on Serenes Forest.
